After seeing not only our own kids get heavily involved in video games, but also many other kids their age and older we decided to start a program that appealed to the “gamer” kid. Our number one goal for our after-school program is to help students become great leaders and team players in society.
We do a lesson each week throughout a 6-week session and discuss topics around leadership and team building. We break down each topic and try to guide them in seeing how they can use these in real life at home and in school. The topics we cover are communication, leadership, teamwork, awareness, and adaptation to new/changed situations.
What Kids & Mom’s Have To Say…
One thing we have both seen with kids these days is depression, anxiety, and isolation on the rise. We combat that by giving them a game they can have fun with by thinking of a strategy, just like in their video games they play, and working together as a small team. Many kids are athletically inclined and play sports, but many others that join our programs are not those kids. Parents are looking for something to plug them into and get them away from the computer and yet still be engaging and fun. The exercise is also a great bonus. Studies have shown that exercise and playing team games help overcome those feelings of depression, anxiety, and isolation. Strategy-style video games have even been shown to help improve cognitive function.
